Wintermute Registers as US Broker-Dealer, Eyes Tokenized Stocks
Wintermute is deepening its integration with traditional finance after its U.S. subsidiary, Wintermute USA LLC, registered as a broker-dealer with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). The registration allows the firm to operate as a regulated proprietary trading firm in U.S. securities markets and seek designated market-maker roles on exchanges.
The crypto market maker, which handles over $10 billion in average daily trading volume across more than 60 exchanges, can now trade equities and equity options for its own account. It is also authorized to act as an authorized participant for exchange-traded products, including digital-asset ETFs, and may self-clear transactions involving digital asset securities for its proprietary book.
Wintermute founder and CEO Evgeny Gaevoy said the company’s long-term conviction is that digital asset markets will evolve in multiple directions and that digital assets and traditional finance will ultimately integrate more deeply. The firm plans to initially focus on markets closely tied to crypto, such as commodities and digital-asset ETFs.
Looking ahead, Wintermute aims to expand into tokenized equities if U.S. regulators approve a broader market for them. The broker-dealer registration provides a regulated foundation to participate in that shift. Over the next three to five years, the company intends to compete more directly with established firms such as Jump Trading, Jane Street and Citadel Securities.
Wintermute USA is headquartered in New York and operates with a dedicated local team. The registration follows increased investment in the U.S. and continued engagement with policymakers over digital-asset market structure, marking a strategic pivot from a crypto-native liquidity provider to a bridge between crypto and Wall Street.
